WASH YOUR NOSE!

Commonly called "sinus irrigation," keeping your nose free of allergens, viruses and harmful bacteria can really help reduce symptoms like sneezing, runny nose, itching, stuffiness- even wheezing and shortness of breath. One study estimates that doing this can reduce symptoms by 30% and your need for medication by 60%!

There Are Several ways to wash your nose

Neti Pot

A Neti Pot is a device that pushes a flow of solution through your nasal passages for the purpose of clearing out built-up mucus and foreign substances. The best solutions for this are buffered saline solutions (for example, baking soda and salt and water). However to avoid extraneous infections and irritation, keep it pure by using a purified water like distilled water and a pure salt. Table salt has too many additives.

Irrigation Syringe/Wash Bottle

You can use a nasal irrigation syringe or wash bottle to push buffered saline solution through your nasal passages if you prefer. It's best to find one with a comfortable tip that won't irritate sensitive membranes. Also, because they hold less liquid than the Neti Pot you'll probably need to fill them multiple times. To avoid contamination, pour more solution into the top of the syringe rather than dipping the tip into your solution container.

Nose Spray

Nose sprays are becoming popular because of their simplicity and  convenience. They moisten the nasal passages with the solution, thinning out trapped mucus and giving great relief. However, they are not as good at flushing out the substances causing the problem. Some nose sprays combine irrigation with medications that also relieve symptoms. Spray each nostril multiple times or as directed until you get relief. Blowing your nose before and after may improve elimination of the offenders.

Moistened Nasal Swab

Nasal swabs are great for combining cleaning and solution application quickly and conveniently. Dip the cotton tip of a swab into the solution and gently, thoroughly clean one nostril membrane.  Only insert as far as is comfortable.  Dip the other end or a new swab into the solution and clean the other nostril. Discard the used swab(s). Blowing your nose before and after cleaning aids maximum elimination of offending substances and microbes. Some nasal swab products also use liquid or powdered formulas that both aid cleaning and calm symptoms.

Here's a Sample Saline Nose Wash Recipe

In a clean, one-quart jar add equal parts purified salt and baking soda (1-2 tsp) to 1 quart of distilled water. Stir or shake before each use. Discard any remaining after 1 week.
